Pediatric General Surgery

Within Wesley Pediatric Specialists, you will find our Pediatric Surgery Clinic. You may be referred to our clinic by your child's primary care physician or may follow up here after a hospital stay in our hospital. Children with known or suspected surgical diagnoses may be seen here by one of our three Pediatric trained Surgeons and/or Physician Assistants who will review your child's medical records and provide an assessment and plan of care for your child and family.

New techniques are constantly being developed using proven strategies from other established MIS (minimally invasive surgery) procedures. We continue to work with producers of surgical instruments (including robotics) to help invent new tools and improve old ones in order to make them safer and more reliable. In this way, more and more problems become amenable to an MIS solution.

A minimally invasive approach exists for many, if not most, procedures. Absolute bars to a minimally invasive surgery approach may include excision of very large tumors such as neuroblastoma or presence of scar tissue that precludes safe access to the chest or abdomen. However, even in cases of severe internal scarring, an MIS approach may be possible and even preferable.

First-time visitors: what to expect

At your first visit, your family will be greeted by one of our medical office specialists who will assist with checking in and verifying that we have all the correct information for the patient. This is very important so that we are able to communicate with your family for future visits/communications.

Next, a nurse or medical assistant will greet the child and family and show them to our vital signs area where they will obtain your child's height, weight, and vital signs. The nurse/medical assistant will then take the child and their family to an examination room to complete the check in process which includes verifying the patient's medication list, allergies, hospitalizations, surgeries, and obtaining a brief history as to the reason for referral to our clinic.

The surgeon will then discuss with you your child's medical history, records received, and examine the child and discuss a treatment plan based on the patient's diagnosis or possible diagnosis. The average length of our surgery visits are around 30 minutes, depending on the complexity and reason for the visit.
